Prepare cake according to package directions; cool completely.
In medium mixing bowl, dissolve gelatin mix in boiling water; cool slightly. Add cherry pie filling; stir to combine. Cut cake into chunks.
In a trifle dish or large glass serving bowl, layer 1/3 cake chunks, 1/3 cherry filling and 1/3 whipped topping. Repeat layers.
Refrigerate 1-2 hours or until ready to serve.
